Paul Walsh knows a thing or two about porn: He’s cataloged hundreds of millions of pornographic pages. But it’s not because he’s some kind of sex addict. No, as the founder and CEO of Metacert, he’s trying to build the perfect family-friendly browser.
If you have a question like, “What countries host the most porn,” there’s a good chance Walsh knows the answer to it. He put together the following infographic revealing the twenty countries and ten US states that serve up the most illicit content. The winner? U-S-A!
And the competition isn’t even close. America hosts 428 million porn pages, or 60 percent, of the worldwide total. Netherlands, which sits in 2nd place, hosts 187 million pages (26 percent).
Meanwhile, 66 percent of the porn hosted in the United States comes from California, which makes sense considering it’s the center of both the technology industry and the porn industry. Something about the weather here, I guess.
And finally, Walsh isolated the ten most common top-level domain names used by porn sites. “.com” is the clear winner making up 82.46 percent of all porn sites. Interestingly, the “.xxx” domain only accounts for 0.62 percent of all porn sites. So much for the guy who paid $500,000 for “gay.xxx.” In fact only 61 of top million most-visited sites in the world are .xxx domains.
