The Fungus Among Us... WCCA

Why does Worcester need WCCA? It doesn’t. But WCCA needs Wusta. The fact is, WCCA has outlived its usefulness - assuming it was ever useful - a questionable social experiment that turned into a money pit for the locals and a goldmine for the DePasquale family.

So what do the taxpayers get out of this, for their million dollars a year? Well, you get honest to goodness junk programming and non-stop whiteboards. Yes whiteboards! The rest is horrendously poor quality time filler. Heck the locals made it, so whatcha expect?

WCCA’s most obvious flaw is that it caters to Worcester’s fringe population, a cadre of self-purported intellectuals. I recall one show (and it was enough) with Rosalie Tirella discussing local and world issues. Shocking. I never realized ignorance of that magnitude existed anywhere on this planet. Welcome to WCCA, Wusta's community resource.

Or what about Councilor Barbara "Babs" Haller’s, or any of the councilors for that matter, political monologues. Can’t figure out why they hide in front of a camera instead of interacting with the electorate in a public forum as good ole Democracy prescribes. But this is Wusta, politicians don’t interact with the voters. What are they afraid of?

So, are these folks Wusta’s opinion leaders or some self-aggrandizing know-nothings preening in front of a camera? Or is it more a sad statement on the state of the City’s political and social thinking? The bottom line is, you’re better informed on issues if you listen to the radio, peruse the internet, read the T&G, or just talk with your neighbors.

And what about the plethora of ethic based programming on WCCA, that even the local immigrants are unaware of. In a less than scientific poll I asked several Hispanic business owners/employees during our shopping forays thru Chandler and Main Sts. if they knew of WCCA? Never heard of it they responded. The Vietnamese – a no go there too. Albanians? Couldn’t find any. The Arabs or Afrikaners. Couldn’t find any of them either. For the people, by the people - really? Mauro and his fringe followers.
