Middle Eastern cultures have had women suicide bombers, why not let them fight in battle, right up there with the guys. Syria's Bashar-al-Assad had foresight when he recruited and trained women (the young men fled to the hills) for military duty, primarily in the homeguard.
It would appear to be more a propaganda effort; women are flocking to their ranks. There was a facebook page about it, since removed.
Now the USA had decided to let women on the front. Somewhat late but certainly a milestone in equality.
