Interesting stuff from The Atlantic: Where the 1% live. Now that you know where they live, what of it?
In the South, seems there's a lot of big incomes. Big swaths in Georgia, Texas, and Florida.
Georgia? Who woulda thought? I thought it was a barren landscape populated by boll weevils and itinerant cotton farmers drinking moonshine all day. Georgia is in fact one of the 3 top recipients of federal tax dollars. With so many rich folk there, how can that be?
Take a look at the Northeast. Seems metro Boston has some serious money there. Worcester ain't too shabby either. But still a lot of po folk around Worcester. Probably too lazy to find a job eh?
Wonder where Worcester's 1% live?
They're in Census Tract 730801, the area East and West of Salisbury St. See the NYT's Mapping America interactive map and do some exploring. I did.
Of the 1,560 households, 9% (140) have household earnings over $200k - a drop of 4 pct. pts. since 2000.
Census Tract 730801 is an area encompassing part of District 1: Ward 1, Precients 3 and 4, comprising 3,940 registered voters of which 75% or 2,940 are active, 1,000 inactive.
Most notable resident? Two-time city council looser Stephen Buchalter lives on Salisbury St. The place with all the ugly campaign signs. Why would a successful (his words) businessman need a 2nd job?
To make ends meet?
