Some councilors make a career of politics, others leverage their experience into a non-profit job, some seek higher office. Some retire. Most just fade into oblivion. Others just won’t go away. You reap what you sow. After years of petty intrigues as a city councilor, last week karma handed Barbara Haller her legacy - ignominy.
It’s been a long haul for the likes of Barbara Haller, a bar owner with political ambitions. 8 years on the Worcester city council, and not a thing to show for it. No legacy. No nuttin.
All that's left - her swan song - is a failed chicken ordinance that was greeted with derision - The Chicken Lady. Not the legacy one would hope for.
It all culminated last week in the city council chamber. Barbara Haller tried to leverage her reputation into a seat on the Worcester Public Library’s Board of Directors. A majority of the city council (Eddy, Germain, Rivera, Rushton, Russell, Toomey) had the last laugh. Hallers' campaign motto: Moving forward together! Those six surely did.
How did it come to that? 8 long years of petty intrigues and backbiting came back to haunt her. But isn’t that part of politics? Sure, some can play the game, many are inept at it - leaving a trail of disgruntled councilors. Not to mention the constituency. All just as petty.
Surprisingly Nicole Apostola didn’t apply for a library board seat. She's been an advocate since way back. Maybe she did and was rejected. Hey, bookworms are finicky. Actually, petty.
An ignominious end for the likes of Barbara Haller. You reap, what you sow.
